Kwame named construction manager for St. Louis Community College Project

Kwame Building Group has been named construction manager and owner’s representative on a new $10 million facility for St. Louis Community College’s William J. Harrison Northside Education Center in St. Louis. The approximately 30,000-square-foot project will include classroom facilities. Construction is scheduled to begin in winter 2009 and be completed in 2010. The architect is KAI.

SunCoke Energy plant selects Guarantee Electrical

Guarantee Electrical has been selected to perform electrical work at the new $290 million SunCoke Energy Inc. plant in Granite City, IL. Guarantee Electrical, which has a long-standing partnership with U.S. Steel, is serving as electrical contractor, with 80 to 90 electricians on-site at peak production.

Using Recycled Shipping Containers as Building Blocks for Green Construction

Leslie Guevarra of Greener Buildings reports on the Lawrence Group’s eco-friendly model home built of shipping containers, which is featured at the West Coast Green conference.

Amid neck-craning stacks of shipping containers at an Alameda depot, a building crew has worked for the past two weeks to fashion an eco-friendly, two-story structure from five recycled and refurbished steel cubes that had been used to haul cargo. The project by SG Blocks LLC and the design firm called the Lawrence Group will bring an 1,800-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath home to San Jose, where the structure dubbed Harbinger House will be the centerpiece on the tradeshow floor of the West Coast Green conference that runs from September 24 to 27. read more…

Local Kwame Building Group is construction manager on Pittsburgh light rail project

St. Louis-based Kwame Building Group is serving as construction manager for the $435 million Port Authority of Allegheny County’s North Shore Connector project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. KWAME is part of the joint venture called TriGold, which includes Jacobs Engineering of Pasadena, California and HDR, an architectural and engineering firm of Omaha, Nebraska.

The new 1.2 mile extension will expand Pittsburgh’s current 25 mile light rail transit system known as the “T,” from the Gateway subway station underneath Stanwix Street and the Allegheny River to the developing North Shore area of Pittsburgh. Construction fatalities fell in 2007

On-the-job fatalities in construction were down 5% in 2007, but the decline was less than other industries and the highest of any sector, according to the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The construction industry had 1,178 workplace deaths last year, down 5% from 2006. Construction has reported the most fatal work injuries of any industry for the past five years.

For all U.S. industries, fatal workplace injuries were down 6% last year, the smallest number of on-the-job deaths since the Labor Deparment first reported the census in 1992.

Of the total construction fatalities last year, 38% were the result of fall, according to the data tables.

Valero Energy Corporation–Benicia has recognized Guarantee Electrical for its outstanding safety record at the company’s Benicia, California refinery through their “Contractor of the Year Safety Award for Large Contractors.” St. Louis-based Guarantee Electrical has provided electrical maintenance, service, instrumentation and electrical construction on capital projects for the refinery since 1969. read more…

American Concrete Pavement Association recognizes Kwame Building Group/Green Joint Venture Project

The American Concrete Pavement Association has recognized Kwame Building Group/Green Joint Venture for their work on the reconstruction of taxiway F, L & S at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The project was rated the “best commercial service and military airport concrete paving project completed in Missouri in 2007.” A St. Louis-based program and construction management firm, Kwame Building Group (KWAME) has completed several major projects at Lambert-St. Louis.

Architecture firms find happiness in pro bono

Tim Rowbottom, a principal with St. Louis-based Lawrence Group, was named in an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch about pro-bono architecture work.

Rowbottom designed the interior for the Downtown Children’s Center in St. Louis on his first day at work and has been donating time to the project for four years. Several architects and designers at the Lawrence Group got involved in the children’s center and over the years have donated the equivalent of $90,000 in billable hours to the project, Rowbottom said.

KWAME to manage Lambert-St. Louis International Airport Renovations

St. Louis-based Kwame Building Group has been named program management consultant for the Airport Experience Program, a renovations campaign at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

Over a five-year period, the airport’s terminal, concourse and passenger support facilities will undergo renovations. Restoration of the airport’s domed ceilings will begin in mid-July; additionally, replacement of the interior baggage system and a $1.5 million roadway signage program will begin in early 2009.

One of the first projects will be a $5 million renovation of the inbound baggage handling systems and six carousels, which is expected to be complete in the spring of 2009. The program also includes renovation of the main terminal and concourses A, B and C.

Lawrence Group completes green HQ for Kirberg in St. Louis

Lawrence Group has completed the redevelopment of Kirberg Co.’s 44,000-square-foot headquarters and distribution facility in St. Louis. Lawrence Group provided design/build services for the redevelopment of the historic property, which contains office and warehouse space.

The two-story building achieved LEED certification with sustainable features such as bamboo flooring, motion-sensor lighting, maximized natural light, the use of recycled materials, a green roof, increased water efficiency and the installation of a shower for employees to promote alternative transportation.
