Eye On The Sparrow review
The Great Recession – it finally has an official name! "Eye On The Sparrow: The World Within St. Louis" is based on interviews of St. Louisians, and tackles what this event has meant to St. Louis.
Sparrows are everywhere, and are so common we hardly notice them. St. Louis is full of human sparrows – ordinary people who in our busy lives we do not even see, but who meet the challenges of life with dignity, humor and fierce courage. Eye On The Sparrow follows one woman, Harper, as she falls from the grace of a good job, a marriage and a home, to become one among the sparrows. Harper is a forty something attorney, who has been working with the same law firm for twelve years. The husband whom she put through law school, has recently left her. We meet Harper on the day that she is laid off from her law firm and see her world turned upside down. Having relied on the "company car" for transportation, she finds herself without a car or a basic knowledge of public transportation. Set within the community of Saint Louis public transportation, Harper's life becomes intertwined with the lives of these courageous, heroic ordinary people. It is through them that Harper learns how to reorder her priorities and begin to live her life again.
The cast is also full of very talented Sparrows. The amazing Ruth Ann Latchison Nichols, renowned Gospel Singer, will team up with the multitalented Raven Wolf – what a gift their music will be! Two favorite actors return to Gitana's stage: Healy Rodham will play Harper and Myah Maedell will play Carla. L. A. Williams and William Ketterer join us for their debut performance on Gitana's stage. Fresh from their February tour of Living The Dream, several of the Southside to Global performers will be appearing in the show: Chelsea Russell, Danielle Johnson, Janelle Johnson, Jackson Denis, and Daniel Johnson.
What if the simple incredible people around us were really angels trying to take us to a higher place of love and fellow feeling? If you have ever been touched or inspired by someone of a humble background this is a play to see! If strength is what you need at this moment, then come and get it from these wonderful characters in Eye On The Sparrow.
The play appears in Xavier Hall, Saint Louis University, 3733 West Pine Blvd, St. Louis, MO. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. from May 21 through June 5th. Tickets are on sale now through Gitana Productions.
