Local literacy project jumps into a scholarship search business
Barbara Primm lived the life of stereotypical statistics as a teen mother. she overcame those statistics and now leads students to attend college funded by scholarships. There is no excuse why you shouldnt go to college, Primm said. For 15 years, Primm has been an educational consultant in St. Louis. In December 2008, she started the program LEAP (Literacy and Education Applied with Purpose) to address literacy issues. The program provides assessments to see if a student is working at grade level and to offer fee-based tutoring on taking the GED.LEAP offers a continuum of learning that enables individuals to achieve their goals and develop their knowledge, skills and potential. The program serves anyone, in all age ranges, who needs to work on their reading skills.Primm recently took a group of students to visit Missouri colleges. Parent Shelia Holt took her daughter, who is a junior in high school.
I wanted her to see the college atmosphere and get the experience. she loved it and is still talking about it, Holt said.I learned how its important to start early and not wait to apply. Theres a lot of paperwork.Another parent, Vival Lopez, took her son and nephew on the tour. Its getting close to graduation and actually seeing the college and experience, Lopez said. its being more of a reality for them.
This summer Primm will offer two college tours. The tour will focus on helping Hispanics, including those who arent U.S. citizens, to pursue college in the states. The second will tour HBCUs on the East Coast. Primm says it will be a very educational trip.Theres a way to get it done, Primm said of education. Quit blaming others and get it done.Primm was a teenage mother, but remained determined to attend college and graduate. Primm has master degrees from Webster University and Lindenwood University and is currently working on a doctorate in education from Phoenix University. She also is writing a book called Hair, Nails and Toes: You Decide.
People still buy and do what they want to do, even with the economy. we need to invest in our children, Primm said.Primm believes it should not fall all on the student to choose a school. some students may not make the best decision based on the influence of television, Greek life or sports. its a family decision, Primm said.According to Primm, many Ivy League schools provide a full-ride scholarship to students with a high grade-point average if their parents income is under $60,000. Primm created a database about colleges and scholarships.A lot of information is not being told, so I took it upon myself, Primm said.
Primm currently has only one sponsor, Anthony Tony Thompson from Kwame Building Group, and is applying for grants for more funding. Primm still needs more certified tutors, sponsors and participating schools.
