St. Louis’ Kwame managing correctional project in New Orleans

St. Louis-based Kwame Building Group has begun providing construction management services on the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office Correctional Complex in New Orleans.

Construction has begun on the kitchen/warehouse facility, the first building in a new, safer and more efficient Correctional Complex for Orleans Parish. The kitchen/warehouse facility will be completed in late 2012.

The three-story, 163,885-square-foot kitchen/warehouse facility will have the capacity to serve more than 25,000 meals in a 12- to 14-hour period. The facility’s central power plant will generate eight mega-watts of emergency generator power, enough to run 750,000 square feet of office space. More than one mile of shelving will provide ample storage in the warehouse.

The Sheriff’s Office will now begin the bidding process for the second phase of the Correctional Complex, which will include a new inmate housing structure with 1,438 beds, a new permanent intake and processing center, and administrative facilities.

The general contractor for the kitchen/warehouse facility is Woodward Design-Build. The architectural team includes Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects, Grace & Hebert Architects and Billes Architecture.
