“Eye on the Sparrow” Juried Photography Competition

Initiated by Gitana Productions, this black-and-white photography competition is a community engagement activity to bring attention to the many extraordinary yet ordinary people who enrich our lives in the St. Louis region.

Beginning May 21, 2010 thru June 6, 2010 Gitana will produce an original play "Eye On the Sparrow: The World Within St. Louis" written by Lee Patton Chiles. Based on the actual stories of diverse St. Louisans the play will take place at St. Louis University. The play and photo competition will amplify the importance of seeing the beauty within and recognizing the contribution of the “sparrows” among us.

All of us have a hero, someone whose work or deeds inspire us to be better-someone who makes the St. Louis community better. Sometimes our heroes are people of simple means and humble backgrounds. Maybe it is the person who helped you get through the roughest time in your life. Maybe the person gives to others when they have little to spare. Unsung heroes surround us and often seem unlikely such as a bus driver, a caretaker, a person from a different culture or even a homeless person who shares words of encouragement. It is their image and stories that we wish to capture in this contest. Select photos and stories will be a part of a juried exhibit that tours the St. Louis region in 2010.
