addition to Herrin Hospital, which serves Herrin and surrounding communities in Southern Illinois. The Lawrence Group provided the architecture, interior design, furniture procurement, interior signage coordination, and artwork selection for the facility.
The 50,000-square-foot addition includes a new main lobby reception and waiting area, the Gift Garden gift shop, patient registration offices, conference/classrooms, patient rooms, diagnostic radiology and rehabilitation therapy. The diagnostic radiology area includes both a new and a relocated CT scanner, offices and a storage space that will soon be converted to an MRI scan room. The rehabilitation department includes occupational therapy, speech therapy and physical therapy with a large gym and a therapy pool.
“We now have a beautiful modern addition that reminds you of a big city hotel,” said Becky Ashton, Herrin Hospital administrator. “The colors are so inviting yet soothing. The Lawrence Group did an outstanding job of tying all area together and everything flows throughout the facility. We are very proud of this new addition and are thankful to everyone who was a part of making this dream come true.”
The second floor of the addition includes a modernized and expanded 41-bed inpatient medical surgical nursing unit and a 12-bed addition to the existing adjacent inpatient rehabilitation unit. New nurse stations, conference/consult rooms and staff lounges also were added. The existing inpatient rehabilitation unit activity/dining area, rehab gym, staff work areas and conference room also were renovated and upgraded.
The project also included the addition of the Julia Harrison Bruce and Fred G. Harrison Memorial Garden, a landscaped, open-air ‘healing garden’ in the courtyard created between the existing main entrance and the addition. Visible from the lobby and from many of the patient rooms, the garden and its lush beds offer a peaceful respite to patients, visitors and staff. The central element of the garden is a floating granite globe fountain, which feeds a small stream and pool.
The interior finish and overall design of the facility was inspired by nature, with natural materials such as stone floors and anigre wood veneer panels used in the main lobby and elevator lobbies. Soft blue, green and beige tones and curvilinear floor patterns help reinforce the nature theme. The overall space was enhanced with decorative lighting and patient rooms were finished with maple laminate floors, flat-screen TVs and soft blue-and-green walls to create a home-like atmosphere.
Alberici Constructors of St. Louis was the construction manager on the project and Tchoukaleff Kelly Hartke of St. Louis completed the master planning.
