expansion and renovation of the St. Peters Rec-Plex. Ankeny-Kell Architects of St. Paul, Minn. is designing the projects.
Plans include construction of a 106,000-square-foot recreational facility with two NHL-size ice rinks with seating for 1,200 and 300, a full size gymnasium, multi- purpose gym, concession area, and a High Intensity Training (HIT) center. The new facility will be just south of the existing Rec-Plex in the City Centre Complex. Construction of the new facility will begin this fall and is scheduled to be completed by September 1, 2007, in time for hockey season. The existing south rink will be shut down after the expansion is complete and a parking lot for the new facility is planned on the site of an existing soccer field.
Walton will team with general contractor Duggan Contracting Corporation of St. Peters to make renovations to the existing Rec-Plex facility, which was built in 1994 and hosted the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival and the 2004 Olympic Diving Trials. Plans for the existing facility include rebuilding half of the existing gym into two levels and adding additional space on the second level to provide over 8,500 square feet for cardio and weight training.
“The equipment and materials being used are state-of-the-art,” said Bret Zlatnik, Walton Construction project manager. “We are using the latest technology in ice making equipment and humidity management, in addition to working with insulated precast walls, sport flooring and sports equipment.
“Another challenge is the scheduling, cost and budgeting associated with designing and building a new facility while coordinating renovations to an existing facility. Ensuring the safety and convenience of Rec-Plex visitors during all of the stages of construction is one of the team’s top priorities,” Zlatnik said.
