National Expansion Memorial – Gateway Arch. The project was completed on-schedule on February 28, within a tight three-month timeline. The newly renovated store officially opened for business on March 2.

The $425,000 project included the demolition and renovation of the existing 3,000-square-foot “The Museum Store” and support office located in the base of the Gateway Arch, which was originally dedicated in 1966.

Walton Construction built a temporary store in an adjacent lobby, which enabled them to meet the tight schedule.

“The temporary store allowed us to demolish and remodel the existing store sooner,” said Craig Phillips, Walton project manager. “We also constructed a temporary partition that separated the construction space from the public space, so that we could stay focused on our work and keep the public safe. When you are working with a building that is more than 40 years old, you will discover some challenges.”

In addition to the tight schedule, strict security restrictions were enforced by the property owner and manager, The National Park Service, Phillips said.

“The National Park Service was very clear on their security restrictions, and with good reason since the Gateway Arch is a federal park,” said Phillips. “Walton was able to flow materials and manpower through the project in a way that was compliant with their restrictions, while still meeting the project schedule.”

Unique features of the remodeled store include high-end finishes, a complex reflected ceiling plan, custom millwork and terrazzo flooring.

“The flooring is a solid surface with intricate detail and a lot of radius layout and multi-coloring,” said Phillips.”

The architect on the project was Peckham Guyton Albers & Viets, Inc. (PGAV).
