the $4 million Charles Drew Health Center expansion and renovation, which broke ground in Omaha, Nebraska this week. The 13,500 square foot expansion project is scheduled to be complete by June 30, 2007.
“We are very pleased to be involved in this much-needed expansion, and to become part of the Omaha community,” said Tony Thompson, president and CEO of KWAME. “Because of this expansion, many more residents will receive the quality medical care they need at an upgraded, state-of-the-art facility.”

KWAME is managing the design, construction and diversity programs for the Charles Drew expansion project. To date, the design schedule and budget have been met, bids have been opened and major contracts have been issued. Other team members include Omaha firms:

The Schemmer Associates – Architect
Lueder Construction – Prime Contractor for the Expansion
Buland Group – Prime Contractor for the New Parking Lot

As a result of KWAME’s efforts, the diversity/PBE/DBE participation for the project currently is 14 percent, well above the City of Omaha’s typical goal of 10 percent, and efforts are ongoing to increase participation even further. KWAME Is overseeing a mentor-protégé program and a workforce participation program to enhance diversity on the project.

Founded in 1983, The Charles Drew Health Center was the first urban federally funded community health care facility, providing health care to low-income residents in northern Omaha. Approximately 78 percent of the center’s clientele are below the federal poverty level and 20 percent have family incomes of less than half of the federal poverty level.

With the completion of the expansion, Charles Drew Health Center will double in size and will serve as a “one-stop-shop” for families seeking medical, dental and behavioral health services. The facility will include a state-of-the art pharmacy, twenty-seven exam rooms, five dental suites, a multi-purpose community room; educational class rooms; expanded laboratory and radiology departments; a fitness center; expanded parking; and provide ample space to house all CDHC pediatric programs.

Kwame Building Group is a pure program and construction management firm providing estimating, scheduling, project planning, value engineering and other project management services as an independent advocate for owners and developers. Public and private sector projects include educational facilities, major airports nationwide, light-rail systems, hospitals and government facilities.
