Kwame Building Group, Inc. (KWAME) of St. Louis is providing construction management services to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources on the redevelopment of the state park, which was damaged by the breach of the Taum Sauk Reservoir in December 2005. KWAME is monitoring the reconstruction progress as well as providing ongoing reviews of the architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and civil engineering drawings and specifications for compliance with contractual requirements.

The redeveloped day-use area of the park opened to the public in June, with a new boardwalk to provide easy access for viewing and swimming in the popular rock-and-river formations of the shut-ins. The day-use area includes picnic sites, pedestrian trails, access to the East Fork of the Black River, several interpretive shelters and the park store.

The Black River Center in the day-use area of the park will be completed later this summer and will feature interpretive exhibits, meeting rooms and a small retail area. The Johnson’s Shut-ins Campground in the Goggins Mountain area of the park, also scheduled for completion later this year, will include camper cabins and basic, electric, sewer/electric/water, equestrian and walk-in campsites. Redevelopment of the park began in 2008 after the cleanup, planning and design process were completed.

To check on progress at the park and for more information about amenities that will be available, visit the Department of Natural Resources' Web site at www.mostateparks.com or call 800-334-6946 or 537-751-6510.
