ST. LOUIS, MO –The West Coast Green 2008 conference in San Jose, California will feature a visionary home made of recycled shipping containers, designed by St. Louis-based architectural firm Lawrence Group and Colorado-based SG Blocks™. The 1,700-square-foot West Coast Green Showhouse will be constructed on the trade show floor as a demonstration of environmentally sustainable, fast and safe home design.
West Coast Green, the nation’s largest venue for green innovation, building, business and design, will be held September 25 - 27, 2008 at the San Jose Convention Center in Silicon Valley, California. The Showhouse will be positioned along the conference’s “Main Street” and visited by an estimated 14,000 people. The West Coast Green conference features educational events and more than 400 booths showcasing best practices and products for sustainable design and building.
West Coast Green organizers describe the Showhouse as “a spectacular and visionary example of innovative residential design and execution that’s not only affordable, but also highly functional and technologically advanced, while still being tremendously inviting.”
Lawrence Group principal Dan Rosenthal, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, and Lawrence Group’s Eric Heischmidt, designer of the Showhouse, will lead tours of the home.
The 1,700-square-foot, two-story West Coast Green Showhouse features a kitchen, dining room, living room, study and laundry room on the first floor. The second floor includes the master bedroom and bath, bedroom, bathroom and a balcony.
Recycled shipping containers, one of the latest trends in sustainable building materials, are strong, readily available, quick to assemble and provide an environmentally conscious alternative for constructing homes and other buildings. The homes are engineered to be hurricane and earthquake resistant.
More than 300,000 used shipping containers are sitting in port cities throughout the United States because they are too expensive to ship back to their points of origin. The abundant containers are inexpensive, ranging from $500 to $2,000 each, making them a useful building material for affordable housing.
Lawrence Group and SG Blocks™ established a design partnership in 2006 to design and develop building components from recycled shipping containers. The team has completed a military office building in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, created a model home for the Ecobuild Conference in Washington D.C. and is producing 312 housing units for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Lawrence Group and SG Blocks™ also designed a 230-unit continuing care retirement community to be built from recycled shipping containers at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, California. The design of the four-story complex meets historic guidelines and complies with historic zone requirements of an adjacent 18th century Mission. Construction could begin by the end of this year.
