ST. LOUIS, MO – The Department of the Navy-Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast has selected Walton Construction St. Louis as general contractor on the new $25.3 million Parris Island Barracks Complex in Parris Island, South Carolina. Working with Walton Construction New Orleans and architect VOA Associates Incorporated, Walton St. Louis is scheduled to begin construction in January 2009, with completion targeted for November 2010.
Walton Construction, a nationwide leader in “green” building, will work to achieve Silver LEED certification on the South Carolina barracks complex as part of a concerted effort by the Navy to cut energy use and decrease consumption of oil and other fossil fuels.
Walton will incorporate environmentally friendly design, recyclable materials and energy efficient products into the construction of the Parris Island Barracks Complex. The project includes a three-story barracks, a headquarters training complex and a central mechanical plant. The Parris Island Barracks Complex will provide living quarters and a training facility for all Marine recruits east of the Mississippi River.
“We are excited to be selected as the design build contractor on this project for the NAVFAC,” said Tom Kaiman, vice president of operations for Walton St. Louis. “Integrating sustainable energy systems and materials into the barracks and training facility will create a healthier and more energy efficient environment for our nation’s armed forces.”
Silver Certification is the second highest ranking in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. Developed and defined by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction.
Walton Construction St. Louis is a leader in pre-construction, general contracting, design-build and construction management services. As the 12th-ranked contractor in the St. Louis region with annual revenue of $150 million, the office serves national and local casino, healthcare, retail, distribution centers and commercial clients. Walton Construction ranked 33rd among the top 50 general building contractors in the United States in 2007 by Engineering News Record and is a 2007 RCGA Greater St. Louis Top 50 award winner.
