The Department of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District has selected Walton Construction as general contractor on the - $182 million Fort Polk Barracks Realignment renovation project in Louisiana. Walton received “notice to proceed” from the contracting officer on January 29th, 2009.  Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2009, with completion targeted for October 2012. The architect is VOA Associates Incorporated, of Orlando, Florida.

Walton Construction, a nationwide leader in “green” building, will work to achieve Silver LEED certification on the Louisiana based barracks complex as part of a concerted effort by the USACE to cut energy use and create a healthier sustainable training environment.

Walton will incorporate environmentally friendly design, recyclable materials and energy efficient products in the construction of the Fort Polk Barracks Complex. The project includes design and construction for renovation of 13 barracks, and 4 central energy plants that serve the 13 barracks and 57 other buildings.

Contractor evaluations for military projects of this magnitude are based on past performance of cost and schedule growth as well as the contractor’s safety and quality control programs, according to Steve Biederman, president of Walton Construction St. Louis.

“We’re proud to know that this project award affirms the strengths and capabilities of our professionals at Walton Construction,” said Biederman.  “We’re also pleased to show support for our nation’s military by creating a healthy living environment through the sustainable design and construction of their barracks at Fort Polk.”

Silver Certification is one of the highest rankings in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. Developed and defined by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction.

Walton Construction Company, LLC, which maintains full-service offices in Kansas City, Dallas, St. Louis, Springfield, Mo., and New Orleans, is ranked among the top contractors in the United States by Engineering News Record.  Established in 1985, Walton Construction has grown steadily to become a leader in pre-construction, general contracting, design-build and construction management services.
